EDT 500 Instructional Design (ID) Plan Template

The Problem:

I am a special education teacher at a high school.  Finding ways for fellow faculty members and students to use technology easily and efficiently is one of my primary concerns.

One problem is finding an interesting way for students to keep track of homework assignments and upcoming appointments. Many of my students may have completed assignments, but failure to pay attention and focus difficulties often contributes to this.  Needless to say, this is not often an easy behavior for regular education teachers to understand.

Additionally, the idea of Assistive Technology (AT) is often difficult to implement in a high school setting.  The students do not want to be seen as different, and consequently stray away from using technology that could benefit them greatly

The Need

The primary goal of the program is compliance with IEP goals and objectives.  Many times, regular education teachers do fully comprehend that they are responsible for page 8 accommodations.  As a resource teacher, providing assistance to regular education teachers to understand and work with these accommodations is just as important as working with students in the resource room.

One of the first concerns to address is getting students increasingly involved in self-advocacy regarding assignment completion. With most students in my school having smartphones, taking advantage of this situation now will only help as technology becomes increasingly available.  Certain applications like Reminders for the iPhone and iPad can also track completion and provide data on student usage.

In order for all of this to work, any assistive technology must be easy to use and modify to meet student needs.  If the students or teachers do not buy into the usage, nobody benefits

The Audience

Primarily the audience for this activity will be the faculty at the high school.  All are highly educated in their fields, yet some do not actively use technology on a daily basis.  The purpose of the plan will be to increase the use of technology for both teacher and student in order to make the process quick and painless.

In addition to the faculty, I have 16 students on my caseload with varying degrees of disabilities ranging from high functioning students with Asperger’s syndrome, to low average students with learning disabilities and emotional disturbance.  To narrow the student band, the program will focus on those students who have documented excecutive functioning limitations and access to smartphone technology.

Objectives/Assessment

Students will be able to identify and use a task-tracking list similar to Reminders found on iOS5 in order to keep up with assignments and projects.  Screen shots of completed assignments can be emailed to myself to cross-reference with gradebook entries to assess completion and accuracy.

Teachers will be able to use a variety of technology options in order to facilitate communication of assignments, projects, and assessments through Keynote, QR Codes, and Smart Notebook software for the SmartBoard.

Content

  • Follow IEP Goals and Objectives and Program Modifications and Accommodations

  • Executive Functioning, Organization, and Academic Goals

  • Chunking large written assignments, projects

  • Keeping up with homework

Following teacher creation of QR Codes etc., the students in this project will employ compensatory strategies in setting goals in content area classes.  They will create strategies to improve recording of assignments using a variety of methods or technologies in order to improve grades.  Finally, they will monitor time spent on specific subjects and follow through on the use of these particular strategies.

In addition to achieving Mastery on IEP objectives, the ability of these students to self-advocate and meet there academic and behavioral needs is paramount towards their transition into post-secondary programming.

Instructional Strategies

  • Direct Instruction – for use of assignment tracking software, students will use Reminders through iOS5 to keep track of assignments

  • Discovery Teaching – In order that teachers and students have a chance to explore the technology options available to them through QR codes and Smart Notebook software for Alternative assessments and Lessons.

  • Guided Practice -

  • Hands On

  • Human Treasure Hunt – A QR scavenger hunt will help upcoming freshman to tour the school and facilitate a smooth transition into the much larger high school.

  • Independent Practice

  • Learning Labs

  • Slide Show

Additional Materials:

  • Individual student iPhones

  • School based iPads
  • mobilefish.com is an alternative QR code generator that allows you to color code your QR's.  Mobilefish was used to create QR codes for the scavenger hunt.

Program Use

The files and video’s within this ID project present resources for regular education teachers.  The video demonstration involving Red Laser presents an instructional opportunity for teachers to explore on their own time, which most educators seem to prefer over being pulled from the classroom for professional development.

As a resource teacher, I work with both regular education teachers and students on my caseload, so the resources contained within this ID project serve as tools for both teachers and students to utilize in order to meet academic objectives.

Many of the resources within this plan are adaptable for multiple situations and will only be contained by individual creativity. It is my hope that these resources will serve as a springboard for new and creative ways to bring technology into the classroom or out in the community.

Summative Evaluation

Teacher Evaluation (Formative)

  • Is the program or application easy to use?

  • How did using the program or application improve student performance with assignments?

  • How did your students respond to using technology in the classroom?

  • Where the students able to independently create QR codes or electronic responses independently?

  • What aspects did you find effective in utilizing technology in your classroom?

  • What problems did you come across while using the technology in your classroom?

  • Improvements or suggestions

The teacher would be able to monitor assignment completion via the grade portal to demonstrate improved assignment submission.  Performance on quizzes/test should improve with assignment completion.  Class participation should also improve with technology use as students should feel more confident in keeping up with class content.

Student Evaluation (Summative)

  • Is the program or application easy to use?

  • How did using the program or application improve your ability to keep track of assignments?

  • How did the program or application make it easier for you to stay on task?

  • Were you able to respond to questions or tasks independently without teacher supports?

  • What did you like about using the technology?

  • What problems did you come across while using the technology at home or in class?

  • Improvements or suggestions
